The Government Would Rather You Die If It Nets More Revenue

Chris | InformationLiberation

An absolutely astonishing story was quietly reported recently without much fanfare. The story was unquestionably viral, it made the rounds on the internet, but it never got the major boost of coverage from the major media to propel it into the national debate.

Why was this the case?

One can only guess, but perhaps it was because the story was one of the greatest examples of the nature of government and the people who populate it.

That story was of a rather innocuous headline, 'yellow lights are being shortened' all over the United States.

Seems insignificant?

Hardly.

When yellow lights are shortened from 5 seconds to 3, a dramatic increase in accidents occurs. Yet, something else occurs besides more people dying...

Red light camera revenue is increased.

The government is here to help is it not? Their whole purpose is to keep us safe? We're endlessly harangued about how we need to give up our liberties for safety... Surely they will choose keeping people safe instead of netting more revenue at the cost of actively causing more people to die?

Unfortunately, while you or I would choose without question to keep people safe, that's not the nature of the people who populate the reigns of government. They chose more deaths and more revenue.

The government would rather you die if it means they get more revenue. That is a "trade off" they're more than willing to make.

Think about that next time someone tells you the government is "here to help."

Barney Frank: It's no crime having pals with money

© AP
Democrat Rep. Barney Frank, center, is followed by reporters as he departs the television studios of New England Cable News following a taping session of a debate in Newton Monday.
U.S. Rep. Barney Frank didn't get just a free luxury jet ride to the Virgin Islands with a financier who got a $200 million federal bailout, he also stayed at the billionaire's tropical mansion, his aide said.

"They're friends. Are you not supposed to have friends if they're wealthy?" Frank spokesman Harry Gural said of the Newton Democrat's relationship with S. Donald Sussman.

The Herald reported yesterday that Frank, chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, flew to the Virgin Islands last Christmas on Sussman's $25 million Dassault Falcon 2000EX luxury jet.

Sussman is head of Paloma Partners, a company whose subsidiary, Paloma Securities, received $200 million in the $180 billion bailout of insurance giant AIG.

Frank, who has become the face of the unpopular federal bailouts, told the Herald the trip was "personal," saying he and his partner, Jim Ready, are friends of Sussman and his fiancee, U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree (D-Maine). Gural said all four stayed at Sussman's St. Thomas manse.

Frank reported the cost of the flight from Maine to the Virgin Islands at $1,500, but reported no other expenses. Aviation experts pegged the total cost of such a flight at as much as $30,000 each way.

Gural said Frank reported all required expenses.

"Before he did any of this, he went to the Ethics Committee and cleared it. He wanted to make sure he stayed within the lines completely," Gural said.

Frank's opponent, Sean Bielat, was on the airwaves yesterday slamming the jet jaunt.

Republican National Committee spokesman Parish Braden, citing "serious ethical concerns," said: "If there's nothing to hide, Chairman Frank should be forthright with his constituents and immediately address why accepting a paid jet to the Caribbean from Sussman is not a blatant conflict of interest."

Chile miners start new lives, adjust to freedom. They look in pretty good shape for being underground for 69 days!

COPIAPO, Chile – The Chilean miners began their unfamiliar new lives as national heroes Thursday and got a taste of what awaits them outside the hospital doors — a swarm of reporters, TV producers, publicity agents and even soccer teams all desperate for a piece of their story.

A day after their epic rescue, still wearing the oddly fashionable sunglasses that protected them from the bright light when they were hoisted from 2,000 feet underground, the men posed in hospital bathrobes for a group photo with President Sebastian Pinera.
Unity helped the men, known as "los 33," survive for 69 days underground, including more than two weeks when no one knew whether they were alive.
But the moment they walk out the hospital doors, they'll go beyond the reach of a government operation that has cared for, fed and protected them in a carefully coordinated campaign to ensure each of them would leave in top condition.
"Now they're going to have to find their equilibrium and take care of themselves," the hospital chaplain, Luis Lopez, told The Associated Press.
They got quite the preview Thursday of what lies ahead. On their first full day of fresh air, the miners were probably the 33 most in-demand people on the planet.
A Greek mining company wants to bring them to the sunny Aegean islands, competing with rainy Chiloe in the country's southern archipelago, whose tourism bureau wants them to stay for a week.
Soccer teams in Madrid, Manchester and Buenos Aires want them in their stadiums. Bolivia's president wants them at his palace. TV host Don Francisco wants them all on his popular "Sabado Gigante" show in Miami.
Hearing that miner Edison Pena jogged regularly in the tunnels below the collapsed rock, the New York City marathon invited him to participate in next month's race.
What about a reality show? Some other kind of TV work? Why not, said television writer-producer and Oscar nominee Lionel Chetwynd, who said he expected projects were being pitched around Hollywood within hours of the rescue.
"Television is a quick-response medium," he said, joking: "In fact, I think I'll call my agent when we get off the phone."
Three of the men were discharged from the hospital Thursday evening and others were expected to follow on Friday and over the weekend.
Chilean state television showed the men leaving Copiapo's regional hospital by a side exit and getting into a white van.
Among the three was Pena. State TV showed him being enthusiastically greeted by applauding neighbors as he arrived at his home. He described his raucous greeting as "very beautiful."
"I thought I would never return," he said.
Bolivian Carlos Mamani, the only foreigner among the group, and Juan Illanes, also headed to their homes.
The miners families and friends were organizing welcome-home dinners, street celebrations and even weddings. Lilianett Ramirez, whose husband Mario Gomez promised her a church wedding in the "Dear Lila" letter Pinera read on TV when the men were found alive, said they have now set a date: "If God and the Virgin desire it, we'll get married on Nov. 7, his birthday," she said, beaming as she left the hospital.
The government promised six months of psychological treatment, made sure each has a bank account only he can operate, and coached them on dealing with rude questions.
The rescue team even asked Guinness World Records to honor all 33 with the record for longest time trapped underground, rather than the last miner out, Luis Urzua. Guinness spokeswoman Jamie Panas said the organization was studying the question.
The men certainly have an extraordinary story to tell. No one before them had been trapped so long and survived.
Pinera also was defining face of the rescue, embracing Luis Urzua when he climbed out of the pod to become the 33rd miner out, then leading a joyous crowd in the national anthem.
"They have experienced a new life, a rebirth," he said, and so has Chile: "We aren't the same that we were before the collapse on Aug. 5. Today Chile is a country much more unified, stronger and much more respected and loved in the entire world."
The billionaire businessman-turned-politician also promised "radical" changes and tougher safety laws to improve how businesses treat their workers.
"Never again in our country will we permit people to work in conditions so unsafe and inhuman as they worked in the San Jose mine, and in many other places in our country," said Pinera, who took office in March as Chile's first elected right-wing president in a half-century.
Among the most compelling stories from the ordeal will be Urzua's. He was the shift foreman when 700,000 tons of rock sealed them in. It was his strict rationing of the 48-hour food supply that helped them stay alive until help came.
Early reports on their food supply were based on memories and partial information from down below. Based on new details the miners shared Thursday with their families, the rationing appears to have been even more extreme than previously thought.
"He told me they only had 10 cans of tuna to share, and water, but it isn't true the thing about milk, because it was bad, out of date," Alberto Sepulveda said after visiting his brother Dario.
Other family members were told the tuna amounted to about half a capful from the top of a soda bottle — and that the only water they could drink tasted of oil.
"I think he was a fundamental pillar that enabled them to keep discipline," said Manuel Gonzalez, the first rescuer down and the last to leave.
"The guys that were down there, I think they never lost their hope," he added. "There were critical moments, but at the end they never lost their hope because they had very positive leaders who kept the group unified."
None of the miners are suffering from shock despite their harrowing entrapment, a reflection of the daily care and feeding sent through a narrow bore hole by a team of hundreds, and the team of psychologists that helped keep them sane.
"We don't see any problems of a psychological or a medical nature," said Dr. Jorge Montes, deputy director of the Copiapo Regional Hospital.
"We were completely surprised," added Health Minister Jaime Manalich. "Any effort we could have made doesn't explain the health condition these people have today."
The miners told relatives Thursday that their rescue ride was as smooth as a skyscraper elevator. The rescue was planned with extreme care, with plans to monitor the miners by video on the way up for signs of panic, provide them with oxygen masks and dark glasses to protect their eyes, and sweaters for the jarring transition from subterranean swelter to chilly desert air.
At the last minute, rescuers abandoned the in-capsule camera and fiber-optic cable it required as unnecessary complexity. The men said they would be fine, and just wanted out, said Fabricio Morales, technician with Micomo, the telecommunications division of Codelco.
The cause of the Aug. 5 collapse at the San Jose Mine awaits a formal investigation, but the miners's families said they knew it was overexploited and increasingly dangerous, and went in anyway for the slightly higher wages, about $1,600 a month.
Descending for 4 miles (7 kilometers) below the Atacama desert, the mine has been giving up copper and gold since 1885, leaving it honeycombed and unstable.
The miners said it felt like an earthquake when the shaft finally collapsed above them, filling the lower reaches of the mine with suffocating dust. It took hours before they could even begin to see.
Why any of them would go back underground may be hard for outsiders to understand. But most of these men have done it all their lives, and so have their relatives in Copiapo, a gritty, blue-collar city where street vendors hawk Chilean flags bearing the faces of "Los 33."
Dario Sepulveda's family wants him to stop working the mines, but they haven't discussed it yet.
"We're giving him time for all that," Alberto Sepulveda said.

'The View': Bill O'Reilly called 'spineless puke' by Jesse Ventura -- After his remarks about Muslims and 9/11 on Thursday morning's The Viewprogram, Bill O'Reilly was the subject of a couple of segments on The Joy Behar Show on HLN Thursday night. Ms. Behar, who co-hosts The Viewand walked off the stage with Whoopi Goldberg after Mr. O'Reilly's remarks, later asked her guest, former Minnesota governor Jesse Ventura, about his reaction to Mr. O'Reilly's remarks.  Mr. Ventura called Bill O'Reilly "a spineless puke."
Ironically, Jesse Ventura does not totally disagree with Bill O'Reilly's opinion that "Muslims killed us on 9/11." He appeared on The Joy Behar Show to promote his new show about conspiracy theories, and he believes that 9/11 may have been a conspiracy.
He claims to have a woman coming on his new program who will speak about someone she saw walking through the hole "supposedly" created by a plane, said Mr. Ventura.
He said his program will also re-address the conspiracy theories surrounding the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. He said he will have a story about a man who is now elderly but who promised his son that he would go public with a "confession" about that event before he died.
The View airs on ABC weekday mornings at 11 a.m. Eastern.
The Joy Behar Show airs on HLN nightly at 9 p.m. Eastern.

Obama agency busts plan to sell rifles to Americans

Feds call popular gun a 'threat,' proposed shipments canceled

The Obama-run Washington bureaucracy has classified a common and reliable rifle, the M1 Garand, as a "threat to public safety in the U.S.," and the State Department has canceled plans by the Republic of Korea to return tens of thousands of surplus rifles to the U.S. for sale in the consumer market.
The stunning classification of an ordinary gun that was used in the U.S. military for two decades and issued to thousands of soldiers and Marines during World War II and Korea as a threat came in a document by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.
It is being publicized by Examiner gun rights writer David Codrea, who said the federal agency appeared alarmed that there would be "no more controls [over imported Garands] than any other firearm."
"If I read this right, what they're saying is, every gun poses a threat to public safety in the U.S.," he wrote. "This is the same rationale used in model-specific 'assault weapons' bans – the type of gun is somehow deemed relevant, even though untold numbers of such firearms are already peaceably owned in this country, and even though no supporting evidence for this conclusion exists beyond agenda-promoting speculation."

A source who sought confidentiality because of his current status in the industry told WND that the document posted by Codrea is at least an accurate draft, if not the final version, of the document assembled by the ATF.
According to the document itself, it came about because of this scenario: The State Department in May 2009 approved a "request by the Government of the Republic of Korea (ROK) to transfer 87,310 M1 Garand rifles and 770,160 M1 carbine rifles to U.S. private entities for subsequent commercial resale in the United States."
But the ATF contacted the State Department and argued the stock of rifles "poses a threat to public safety in the U.S." As a result, the State Department reversed its decision.
The transfer of such weapons would raise the number of guns available and, therefore, lower the price, making them more generally available, the agency found.
Tracking ability sought
"They may be legitimately sold, trafficked or otherwise transferred. The only controls are the ones in the [Gun Control Act of 1968] and, while these controls require federal firearms licensees to keep certain records and place some restrictions on their firearms sales, such as requiring a background check and limiting interstate shipments to licensees, very few records are required to be provided to ATF and ATF is specifically prohibited from maintaining any form of a firearm registry," the argument said.
The ATF also expressed concern that anyone who can purchase seven separate parts for the gun and install them correctly – or those individuals who can machine their own steel parts for guns – probably could convert the carbine into a machine gun.
The Garand, once praised by Gen. George S. Patton, arrived as a service rifle in the military in 1936 and was issued routinely until 1957, when it was replaced.
The gun expert who acted as a source for WND said the implications of the case are significant for several reasons. One is that a "5-year-old" could figure out that if the government classifies one type of rifle as a "threat," there could be similar designations for other kinds of firearms.
Further, he said a team of ATF managers actually took the initiative in writing the agency's condemnation of the Garand. He noted the agency from 2003-2009 traced an estimated 1.8 million guns for various reasons.
But of those, only some 1,900 were Garands.
"It's a very select core of old-school ATF narcissists who have just become too powerful and too arrogant," the source reported.
Officials with the ATF declined to comment to WND, but a spokesman for the U.S. Department of State explained that the permission had been granted for the rifles to be shipped to the U.S., then it was rescinded.
The decision, explained Karl Duckworth, was prompted because of "concerns that such large numbers" of weapons would be brought into the U.S. and they could be "exploited for illicit purposes."
However, he said he could not elaborate on just exactly who expressed the concerns.
Codrea told WND the classification was a "beachhead" for gun control. The WND source said it was just a symptom of the larger problems at the BATFE, citing a CleanupATF website that describes the work of "returning integrity, accountability and decency to the management of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosive."
The site explains that there have been some 400 employee complaints in the agency in just the last two years.
According to Codrea, "This is the grave threat to the republic? This is nothing less than legislation by unaccountable bureaucrats with an agenda that has nothing to do with legitimate delegated authority."
Former congressman warned of gun control
Former Colorado Congressman Tom Tancredo, now running for governor in his state, wrote some months ago about guns becoming endangered under Obama.
"A U.N. resolution adopted in October calls upon member nations to negotiate the matter and finish writing a [gun control] treaty by 2012. The United States voted for the resolution, which was adopted almost unanimously," he said in a commentary. "President Bush, for all his mistakes and miscalculations, never allowed his U.N. representatives to participate in such negotiations. But Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton reversed course and agreed to join the negotiations."
He said it is such treaties that offer serious threats to the U.S.
"What conventional arms treaties do is constrain the actions of law-abiding nations and law-abiding citizens while allowing outlaw nations and leftist guerrilla groups to build their arsenals," he said. "If you think such international treaties apply only to sales and exchanges among nations and not to individuals, you have not been paying attention to the Obama administration's agenda and to what activist judges have been doing in American courts."
States already rebelling
States already have begun rebelling against federal rules for guns, with eight formally adopting laws that exempt guns made, sold and kept within the states from federal regulations.
A court case over that law now is headed to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
The description of guns as a "threat" recalls the themes in a U.S. Department of Homeland Security report in 2009 that characterized "right-wing extremists" as opponents of abortion and illegal immigration and supporters of gun rights and third-party political candidates.
WND reported on a Department of Homeland Security report that warned against the possibility of violence by unnamed "right-wing extremists" concerned about illegal immigration, increasing federal power, restrictions on firearms, abortion and the loss of U.S. sovereignty and singled out returning war veterans as particular threats.
The report, "Right-wing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization andRecruitment," dated April 7, stated "threats from white supremacist and violent anti-government groups during 2009 have been largely rhetorical and have not indicated plans to carry out violent acts."
However, the document, first reported by talk-radio host and WND columnist Roger Hedgecock, went on to suggest worsening economic woes, potential new legislative restrictions on firearms and "the return of military veterans facing significant challenges reintegrating into their communities could lead to the potential emergence of terrorist groups or lone wolf extremists capable of carrying out violent attacks."
The report from DHS' Office of Intelligence and Analysis defined right-wing extremism in the U.S. as "divided into those groups, movements and adherents that are primarily hate-oriented (based on hatred of particular religious, racial or ethnic groups) and those that are mainly anti-government, rejecting federal authority in favor of state or local authority, or rejecting government authority entirely. It may include groups and individuals that are dedicated to a single issue, such as opposition to abortion or immigration."
Most notable was the report's focus on the impact of returning war veterans.
"Returning veterans possess combat skills and experience that are attractive to right-wing extremists," it said. "DHS/I&A is concerned that right-wing extremists will attempt to recruit and radicalize veterans in order to boost their violent capacities."

Breaking News: John Irish's Baby Cheyenne Returned to Family!! - Alex Jo...

Baby snatched for dad's politics back with parents Reunited! Newborn returned to family where father accused of being 'Oath Keeper' -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Posted: October 14, 2010 8:47 pm Eastern By Bob Unruh © 2010 WorldNetDaily Johnathon Irish, fiancé and baby A tiny baby girl snatched from her parents' custody a week ago when her father was accused of being an "Oath Keeper" today was returned to her parents. According to WND sources close to the case, the accusations against the father, Johnathon Irish, whose fiancée, Stephanie Taylor, is the mother of Cheyenne, have been dropped. WND originally reported on the case last weekend when the state snatched the baby, ordering the father to stand with his hands behind his back and frisking him while social workers took the child. The affidavit supporting the actions cited the father's affiliation with the patriotic organization Oath Keepers. Irish, reached today by telephone by WND, said New Hampshire state law prevents disclosure of details of family court disputes, but the WND source confirmed that the little girl had been returned to the family and there were no future court dates scheduled in the case. Officials with the state Family Court system could not be reached by WND. Learn how to foil those who would damage the nation. Get "Taking America Back" now from the WND Superstore. It had been just hours earlier when a protest was held outside the court where the hearing was going on, and as WND reported officials with Oath Keepers had submitted a demand letter to the state's social services agency to remove the reference in the affidavit in the Irish case. The organization collects affirmations from soldiers and peace officers that they would refuse orders that violate the U.S. Constitution, in light of what they perceive as the advance of socialism in the U.S. Irish had told WND that an affidavit signed by Child Protective Service worker Dana Bickford seeking government custody of newborn Cheyenne a week ago said the agency "became aware and confirmed that Mr. Irish associated with a militia known as the 'Oath Keepers.'" While officials with Oath Keepers confirmed that there were other issues involved in the case as well, they were stunned to learn that the court ruling had described their organization as a militia, and had referenced participation with them as an accusation. http://www.wnd.com/index.php?pageId=215537
